Timbuk2 Limited Edition Giraffe Messenger Bag: An old classic gets a jungle makeover

It’s hard to believe that Timbuk2 has been around for 20 years, because it seems like just yesterday that the San Francisco-based outfit’s simple yet stylish messenger bags were becoming all the rage with hipsters on the West Coast. There was even a point in time when owning a Timbuk2 bag was a badge of coolness, kind of like knowing how to find the newest hotspot in town. But unlike most trends that eventually fade away, Timbuk2 is as popular as ever, thanks not only to its expanding catalog of products (including luggage, iPad cases and more), but because the bags themselves are just that awesome.

Though most people looking to pick up a Timbuk2 bag will likely gravitate toward the classic messenger style due to its customizability, the company has recently released a series of limited edition jungle prints that are perfect for those who like to stand out from the pack. Now, you’re probably thinking to yourself, “Why in the world would any self-respecting guy be caught dead carrying one of these around?” But while animal prints are usually reserved for little girls and women with questionable fashion sense, Timbuk2’s bags (available in a zebra, cobra and giraffe print, the latter of which was provided for review) aren’t nearly as tacky as you might think. It’s not for everyone, but I actually like the fact that they’re a bit more adventurous than the typical messenger.

Apart from the outside of the bag, which features a more stylish canvas fabric instead of the usual ballistic fiber, the Giraffe Messenger is practically identical to its bestselling forebear. The ballistic nylon boot ensures that you can put it down on any surface without worrying about the canvas getting ruined, and the waterproof TPU liner protects the contents inside from getting soaked in the rain. The two large Velcro strips and buckle clips that secure the outside flap also help prevent unwanted damage, but it’s not exactly a fortress like Booq’s line of laptop messengers. You can also attach an optional cross strap for added security, but unless you plan on wearing it while riding a bike (in which case it’s incredibly useful), the strap can be a little too tight for comfort.

If there’s any downside to the bag, it’s that it doesn’t have a whole lot of space. There’s a main compartment with a few internal pockets, an additional slash compartment great for a laptop, and a three-zip front organizer, but that’s it. Then again, if you’re looking for a bag to take with you on a business trip, Timbuk2 has plenty of other styles to accommodate your needs. The Giraffe Messenger is more of an everyday bag to take with you to and from work, and in that respect, it’s great to have something that’s both durable and lightweight. It still would be nice if they included some kind of compartment on the back of the bag, but the Napoleon side entry pocket (which is located on the front inside and can be accessed without even opening the flap) serves a similar purpose.

Minor complaints aside, you’re not going to get much better than a Timbuk2 messenger bag, even if they are a tad on the expensive side. There’s a reason they’re so popular, and it’s not just because they look cool. Timbuk2 has always done a great job of combining style with quality and functionality, and nothing has changed there. The only question you really have to ask yourself is whether or not this limited edition animal print is your cup of tea, because while it might serve as some nice camouflage on a real safari, out in the urban jungle, it’s guaranteed to make you the center of attention.

New Denon Headphones

With the holidays behind us, many of you are enjoying the new gadget gifts you received, including iPods and iPads. One way to maximize these and other music players involves upgrading the headphones, and Denon sent us several samples to try out, including the AH-D510R Over-Ear Headphone pictured above and the AH-C560R In-Ear Headphone pictured below. Both sets are part of Denon’s exclusive Mobile Elite series.

I was impressed with both units. Naturally, the expectations on sound quality were higher for the over-ear headphones and the AH-D510R delivered excellent sound quality, particularly when you consider the $99.99 retail price. The AH-D510R features Denon’s Acoustic Optimizer system, which provides equal ambient air pressure on both sides of the diaphragm for naturally balanced sound. In addition, the earpieces feature Denon’s exclusive Hybrid Metal Housing technology, which combines machined aluminum alloy with resonance-free resin. It matched up well with a much higher-priced set of headphones I use regularly. The headphones are large as you might expect and they don’t come with a travel case, so using them for travel might be a little difficult.

The AH-C560R In-Ear Headphone was also impressive, though I’m partial to the better sound quality from over-ear headphones. I’ll take better sound over convenience any day. That said, everyone needs in-ear headphones in our portable world and this Denon set offers a solid option. For the $99.99 retail price retail price you also get a handy, compact carrying case along with a number of alternate foam tips that make it easier to find a good fit for your ears.

Both sets feature an inline three button remote on the cord that can control select iPod and iPhone models, and includes a microphone that lets you record voice memos with select iPod models and answer calls with select iPhone models. With the inline remote, you can control volume level as well as play, pause, forward and back functions. This handy feature adds nice value, particularly if you own Apple products.

You can’t go wrong with the Denon headphones, and if you really want to enjoy your new music gadgets, check out our Bullz-Eye music reviews as well for some great new music suggestions.

Rachael Ray teams up with Gerber for nutrition

During the holidays it’s easy to remember to give back to your community. There are all sorts of programs and charitable drives that receive extra support from good-willed merrymakers. That kind of charity remains important after the holidays, which is why we wanted to bring your attention to a partnership between Gerber Foods and Rachael Ray’s nonprofit organization, Yum-O.

Gerber has committed one dollar for every Facebook ‘Like’ it receives, up to $500,000, to Yum-O. Here’s the press blurb:

As part of our commitment to nourish a healthier generation, Gerber is partnering with Rachael Ray’s Yum-o! nonprofit organization to ask America to join in our mission to give the gift of nutrition to families in need. Gerber will donate $1, up to $500,000, to the Yum-o! nonprofit organization for every “Like” on our Facebook page by January 15, 2011. Through Yum-o!’s partners, these dollars will help families have access to nutritious food.

This is really a sweet deal for everyone involved. You can do a little good in the world, just by clicking a button, and for every person that clicks that ‘Like’ button, a family in need gets that much closer to not only a nutritious meal, but the education required for a nutritious lifestyle.

Last minute shopping ideas

By all accounts it’s been a very successful holiday shopping season for the retailers. People are starting to feel better about the economy so they’re starting to spend. Of course that means that the stores and malls have been packed, so for those of you who wait till the last minute you had even more excuses this year. Well, you’re now up against it and it’s time to get out there if you need to scoop up some last-minute gifts.

Hopefully our holiday gift guide helped you out, and you can still use it for ideas. Another suggestion would be perfume or cologne gift sets, and you can’t go wrong here if you try out some of the gift sets from Ralph Lauren.

The Holiday Luxuries Coffret (pictured above) is perfect for your significant other or female family members. The package includes an elegant trio of fragrances, including a 1 oz. Romance Eau de Parfum, 1 oz. RL Blue Travel Spray, and 1 oz. Ralph Travel Spray, and the Ralph Lauren name always signifies class.

The World of Polo Coffret (pictured below) is perfect for your father or other guys in the family. We’ve always liked the Polo fragrances from Ralph Lauren and this set is a perfect way to try the entire collection. This set includes the three classics, Polo Blue, Polo Black and the original Polo fragrance. It’s perfect with traditional and upscale tastes, or for that brother who can use a little help in this area! Of course this is a great package if you’re looking for something for yourself as well.

Happy hunting and have a great holiday!

Sights at the LA Auto Show

booth babes at 2010 LA Auto Show

We hit the LA Auto Show recently with our friends from Chrysler, and we’re happy to share some of our favorite sites from the event. The cars were amazing, but some of the eye candy next to the cars was even more impressive.

Chrysler deserves kudos for bring back beautiful models to help them show off their cars, and you can see that as our slideshow above kicks off with four photos of a stunning and elegant blonde showing off the new Ram trucks. Not to be outdone, Chevy made sure to have a fetching brunette on hand for the new Camaro convertible!

Fiat made a big splash at the LA Auto Show with the unveiling of the new Fiat 500 for the US market, and they had a red vintage Fiat 500 on hand to celebrate the event. We made sure to capture it in pictures, along with the tall blonde they selected to showcase the brand.

Check out the rest of the gallery for a tall, beautiful brunette in a green dress along with the shiny red pumps that looked like ruby slippers on the model covering the Range Rover vehicles.
