Drink of the Week: The Rye Sierra

The Great Unnamed Beer and Rye Cocktail. It’s just possible that it has escaped your attention up to this moment, but today is International Beer Day. Of course, for many people, truly every day is International Beer Day, or at least every Sunday during football season.

The ironic thing is that beer, which was once just about the least respected of alcoholic brews in the United States, has achieved more of its props with the rise of craft beer, microbrews and what not. These days, many people who wouldn’t know the first thing about a genuine Old Fashioned or Sazerac and who might freak out if confronted with the ultra-bitter/ultra-sweet flavor of Campari, included in this week’s DOTW, have no problem with the more familiar but no less bitter flavors of some dark beers.

Be calm, however. There’s no need for conflict as I’m happy to say that beer and cocktails are proving to be two great things that, if handled properly, can go great together. Today’s beverage is a delightfully refreshing case in point.

Though it came to me without a name, like the good native son of the West that I am, I have christened today’s beverage the Rye Sierra, after its two main ingredients. It comes courtesy of a mysterious benefactor connected to the makers of the very excellent Templeton Rye Whiskey. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale gets a plug, too — even if I had to spring for my own bottle.

My first attempt at this drink was a true delight, but you’ve got to be certain you don’t fall from a great height with this one. Just make sure you bring plenty of ice and don’t overuse the swizzle stick.

The Rye Sierra

1 ounce Templeton Rye Whiskey
4 ounces Sierra Nevada Pale Ale
1/2 ounce Campari
1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice

Combine the rye, lemon juice, and Campari in a double rocks glass (i.e., like a regular Old Fashioned tumbler, but about twice as big). Stir, and add plenty of ice. Top off with four ounces of the very lovely Sierra Nevada Pale Ale — resist any urges to stir it again at this point. Just let the brew site on top of the summit where it belongs. Salute the mountain range of your choice.

****

If ever there was a drink perfect for a hot day where you’re allowed to eat nothing but popcorn, salted nuts, and wasabi peas, this might well be it. Still, I must reiterate that you are to use plenty of ice and zero stirring is allowed after you have added the beer. Much in the way an Irish Coffee must only be enjoyed through its cap of heavy cream, the rye, Campari, and lemony goodness must only be enjoyed through the ale.

Finally, I realize that a lot of you out there don’t have any double rocks glasses. I actually ran out and bought a couple myself for $3.99 each. That’s because I’m a professional. You amateurs out there can simply cut the proportions in half and drink this out of a regular rocks glass, even if you’re buzz will take twice as long that way.

Also, you have my permission to try this with other brands of rye. I did — and I bet it would have worked great too if I didn’t find out too late someone in my house had Bogarted most of the ice.

Where are the best casinos outside of Las Vegas?

You may be looking for the thrills and glamour of a holiday spent gambling in glitzy casinos. So that means you have to go to Vegas, right? Well, no, actually. It doesn’t. There are loads of other casino holiday destinations that you can try out away from the most obvious choice.

Travelling long haul to spend time in the middle of a desert may not be how you want to enjoy your casino holiday. And although films and popular culture may have you believing Las Vegas is the only choice for the best casinos, we’ve found plenty of places for you to go in Europe, America and Canada.

If you want to stick in Europe then the Gran Escala project in Spain could be the right choice for you. You’ll find this amazing purpose built casino and holiday zone between Zaragoza and Barcelona. There are plenty of other theme parks, loads of casinos, shopping centres, hotels and restaurants offer a whole world of glitz, glamour and excitement on your doorstep – it’s already known as the Las Vegas of Europe.

Or if you’d rather go to a place with its own existing culture, history and excitement, as well as casinos, then London would be a great choice. There are loads of famous casinos, such a The Casino at The Empire London and, when you want a break from the gambling you can take in the fabulous shopping, restaurants, night life and, of course, the classic tourist attractions. London has it all for a perfect holiday, for those who want to gamble and those who want to have their fill of culture, history and style.

Talking of style, finesse and class, you can’t not visit Monaco, if you’re after a gambling holiday among the rich, famous and totally glamorous. The Monte Carlo Casino is one of the largest casino sites in the world – and it’s right next to the beach. There are loads of other attractions to visit when you get sick of soaking up the sun and taking your chances at the tables, including the Grand Theatre de Monte Carlo.

Wherever you end up jetting to on your casino holiday, make sure you spend the journey and any downtime in your hotel practicing your gambling skills on an online casino. There is no better way to hone your skills, win some cash (hopefully!) and kick back and relax. The great welcome bonus over at WinaGames is just one example of the great incentives some online casinos offer – give it a go, there’s nothing to lose!

So we’ve talked about European casino holidays and American casino destinations (with Las Vegas), now what about Canada? It may not call to mind images of glitz, glamour and casinos but it is actually a really popular place to go for a casino holiday. Canada has over 100 casinos, so no matter where you are in the vast country, you’re bound to find somewhere to test your skills.

Ontario, for example, has more casinos than any other Canadian state and it’s also easy to visit Niagara Falls where there are some casinos worth visiting as well as the beautiful countryside and natural attractions to take in. The Niagara Falls View Casino has around 3,000 slots and 150 table games and Casino Niagara has 2,400 slot machines and 79 casino table games. No matter whether you want to give Roulette a go or want to play Blackjack, Baccarat or Craps, you’ll find somewhere in Canada to fulfill your dreams of a fun, adventurous holiday of a lifetime, with added gambling!

Clear Men Scalp Therapy Interview with NFL All-Pro Tony Gonzalez

Paul-Eide-Tony-Gonzalez

Tony Gonzalez is an NFL icon. A lock for the Hall of Fame when he retires, Gonzalez has the most receiving yards (14,268) and touchdowns (107) for a tight end in NFL history, and the second most receptions (1,242) all-time, trailing only 49ers legend Jerry Rice.

Recently, I spoke with the 17-year veteran about his partnership with Clear Men Scalp Therapy, “Marty Ball” and the evolution of the NFL. You can check out a transcription of the interview below, or just watch the embedded video of our discussion after the break.

Bullz-Eye: So Tony, what’s going on with you and Clear Men Scalp Therapy?

Tony Gonzalez: I teamed up with Clear Men Scalp Therapy because as you strive to be the perfect man, it starts with first impressions. And as a football player wearing a helmet all the time, we deal with flakes. They have flake free, dandruff free shampoo that really doesn’t dry your hair out and I love it. It smells great and I’m glad to be a part of it.

Bull-Eye: Speaking of flakes, how has the integration of social media in today’s world changed the way you interact with fans?

Tony Gonzalez: It’s a game changer; everyone has a voice. Let alone just athletes, anyone “famous” or whatever you want to call, everyone gets to voice their opinion. My 12-year-old son has a Facebook and Instagram and he’s like, ‘Dad why don’t you respond to me so I can get more friends?’ and all this stuff. As the professional athlete, it’s a blessing and a huge tool to reach whatever audience you want to reach. On the flip side of that, it’s a dangerous tool, if it’s used improperly and you see athletes putting stuff out there all the time. Once you push send, it’s on there forever; for the rest of your life and even when you leave the earth, people are still able to check out what you thought about a certain subject and it can be dangerous.”

If you’re taking a holiday in the city of Las Vegas, it is pretty likely that you will be visiting some of the casinos that are found around the city, especially along the Strip.
