Coming Soon: A Moviegoer’s Guide to June

june_movies

Though the summer movie season is typically reserved for the kind of big blockbuster action films that dominated theaters last month, June offers a more eclectic assortment of movies, including star-studded comedies, small indies, and yes, another helping of big blockbuster action films. From the return of Superman to the end of the world (twice), there are plenty of good reasons to get out of the sweltering heat and be entertained this June.

“THE INTERNSHIP”

Who: Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson, Rose Byrne and John Goodman
What: Two salesmen whose careers have been ruined by the digital age get internships at Google, where they must compete against young, tech-savvy geniuses.
When: June 7th
Why: It’s been almost a decade since Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson teamed up for “Wedding Crashers” – which, along with “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” helped revive the R-rated comedy – so there’s a certain degree of excitement about seeing them together on screen again. Of course, “Wedding Crashers” was actually funny, whereas “The Internship” doesn’t look quite as promising. The studio clearly believes that just by reuniting the two actors, the laughs will automatically flow, but that doesn’t seem to be the case here. Director Shawn Levy’s previous comedies have been pretty tame in comparison to the duo’s last film, and many of the jokes in the trailer feel about five years past their sell-by date, Still, the Vaughn/Wilson reunion is simply too enticing to pass up, so I wouldn’t count out “The Internship” just yet.

“MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING”

Who: Amy Acker, Alexis Denisof, Clark Gregg, Reed Diamond and Nathan Fillion
What: A modern retelling of Shakespeare’s classic comedy about two pairs of lovers with different takes on romance and a way with words.
When: June 7th
Why: Most directors would take a much deserved vacation after wrapping on a movie as massive as “The Avengers,” but not Joss Whedon, who used his short break between filming and post-production on the Marvel blockbuster to shoot a modern day version of “Much Ado About Nothing” with some friends at his house. The movie is packed with familiar faces from the director’s so-called Whedonverse, with every one of his former TV shows represented in some capacity. Shot entirely in black and white, the film looks about as close to a low budget indie as you’re bound to find, but Whedon and Shakespeare are such a great fit (both celebrated for their sharp and witty dialogue) that it’s a wonder the latter didn’t attempt an adaptation of the Bard’s classic any sooner.

App of the Week: NarcoGuerra

Developer: Game the News

Compatible with: Android Devices

Requires: Android 2.1 and up

Price: $1.04

Available: here

Despite being a short week for most, this has been one of the more bountiful weeks for apps in recent memory. While such notable releases like the iPad release of the immortal “Knights of the Old Republic,” a long overdue great Warhammer gaming app in “Warhammer Quest,” and the creatively exciting music creation app “Musyc,” all deserve recognition, there is one that deserves it even more, for several reasons.

“NarcoGuerra” is a “Risk” like strategy game that sees you take tactical control of the Mexican police force, as they fight their war against the drug cartels plaguing the nation. To do so, you will need to gather intel, battle corruption, and take over cartel controlled and disputed territories all while defending your own via troop distribution and mastering a (initially) simple numbers system. Victory is achieved when you have rid Mexico of the cartel.

Except, just as in real life, it’s never quite that easy. The developer’s larger purpose in “NarcoGuerra” is to make people aware of the astoundingly violent and never ending war that is the real cartel battle in Mexico. To do so, they have made the game’s main mode punishingly difficult, and yes even a bit unfair. Just when you think you’ve got everything under control (which is rare), suddenly corruption destroys your efforts from within, or you’ll be betrayed by bad intel, delayed by the death of a major commander, or stunned by the rise of a new cartel power. The better you do in “NarcoGuerra,” the tougher the cartel pushes back, making defeat most prevalent, the closer you get to victory.

unnamed

It may not sound like much fun, but it very much is. You’re fighting a war that can technically be won, but only just so. As a result you’ve got a lot of gameplay on your slow march to victory that includes all of the usual tactical strategy game niceties, as well as elements unique to the backdrop, like deciding which president to throw your financial support behind in the hopes of turning the tide. The combination of these elements produces an experience that feels appropriately, and effectively, authentic to the context

“NarcoGuerra” uses an un-winnable war as a perfect backdrop to a tense and exciting strategy game that remains a challenge despite whatever mastery you may perceive you have of the proceedings. You may never beat “NarcoGuerra,” but you are also unlikely to tire of fighting the good fight, thanks to some rewarding, ambitious, innovative, difficult, and (somewhat ironically) addictive gameplay.

While the still entertaining multiplayer and skirmish modes are focused on providing a more “video game” experience, it is the main story mode that is the draw. It focuses on a real world horror that deserves more attention, and uses it to enhance what is at its core, one of the most intelligent and entertaining mobile strategy games available. “NarcoGuerra” could have been a blunt political message thinly disguised as a video game, but instead it is a strong and important statement that takes the form of my app of the week.

Product Review: Hairbond UK Styling Products

Men’s hair styling products are a lot like that hot girl you’ve been hooking up with. At first, you’re pretty sure she’s the hottest girl you’ve ever met or been with, and you really can’t wait for the next time to use her.

You feel confident, refreshed, renewed. Every time you’re with her is like the first time, all over again. You’re used to her, love her, have grown comfortable with her — so why would you even consider anything else?

But then you get distracted. “Wait, what’s this? A new men’s styling gel?”

Suddenly, conversation lags. Her jokes aren’t funny. Her laugh sucks. She smells like cheese. She’s a Yankees fan.

Are any of these new observations remotely true? Or are you just looking for an escape? Either way, you continue to spend time with her, begrudgingly, and you’re just not that into it.

Hairbond UK is like that hot girl you just met who makes you realize how substandard your current hair styling product is. I received a canister each of Distorter and Shaper — two distinctly different products for distinctly different hairstyles.

Distorter was filled to the brim with bad assery. If Distorter were to lower itself to take human form for a night, it would be Reggie Miller against the Knicks in 1994, scoring 24 points in the fourth quarter.

Shaper smelled “Just like butterscotch, yo”. It literally has a candy-like scent — but an adult candy, the kind that only appeals to a refined taste, not a child, sort of like black licorice. Yeah, that’s a good one; I’m going to use that one. It’s like the black licorice of styling products.

>More than that, it was absolutely perfect as a shaping product. I spiked my bangs as high as they could go and my hair stayed just as I had styled it even 8-10 hours later. Even though they retained their hold, I was able to adjust my look mid-day.

I put a dab of Distorter in my hair roughly 13 hours ago. While writing this, I stopped, went to the bathroom and adjusted my hair. The hold was still as effective as it was earlier in the day. But I also never felt like my hair had any product in it, so it wasn’t like I was rocking some Clark Gable-esqe slick back look that’s heavily dependent on an overuse of styling products.

How is this possible? I know it sounds like total bullshit, but it isn’t. Even though Hairbond was that effective, my hair never felt like it was glued up or had the lacquer-type feel. My hair was still relaxed, yet performed the way I wanted it to.

So move on from your current styling products and don’t feel bad about it — you don’t owe her a thing. And it wasn’t a total waste, either. If it weren’t for her, you wouldn’t have evolved to the point where you were ready for something better.

If you’re ready for more at a fantastic price, check out the Hairbond UK website: www.hairbond.co.uk
