Coming Soon: A Moviegoer’s Guide to April

“Elvis & Nixon”

Who: Kevin Spacey, Michael Shannon, Colin Hanks, Evan Peters and Johnny Knoxville
What: The untold story behind Elvis Presley and President Nixon’s infamous meeting.
When: April 22nd
Why: Elvis Presley and Richard Nixon were both fascinating personalities, so it’s easy to see why someone might think that making a movie about this otherwise trivial event would be a good idea. But while the absurdity of their impromptu meeting and the bizarre photo that resulted from it is ripe with comic potential, there doesn’t seem to be enough of a story here to warrant an entire film. If the movie has one saving grace, it’s the casting of veteran character actors Michael Shannon and Kevin Spacey, who may not exactly look the part, but make such a great pairing that it’s surprising they haven’t worked together sooner.

“Keanu”

Who: Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele, Nia Long and Jason Mitchell
What: Two friends hatch a plot to retrieve a stolen kitten by posing as drug dealers for a street gang.
When: April 29th
Why: After gaining popularity with their eponymous Comedy Central sketch show, it was only a matter of time before Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele made the jump to the big screen. “Keanu” sounds exactly like the kind of movie you’d expect from the comedy duo, so it’s a little surprising that it received such mixed reviews following a “work-in-progress” screening at this year’s SXSW film festival. It’ll be interesting to see how the movie evolves between then and April 29th, because while Key and Peele have proven that they can be funny in short clips, whether that brand of comedy translates into a full-length feature remains to be seen.
