Few girls have as much nerd cred as Summer Glau. Not only was she River Tam on “Firefly” and later, the movie “Serenity” based on the same series, she also appeared as a Terminator in “The Sarah Connor Chronicles.” To top it all off, she’s adorable, which is why we were happy to see she’s been chosen as an Esquire magazine “Woman We Love.”

To use the Hollywood pitch technique, “Middle Men” is “GoodFellas” with porn, an amusing story of a businessman (Luke Wilson) who helps two guys with a great idea make millions of dollars by giving customers a way to purchase pornography online discreetly. The more he gets involved in the business, though, the harder it is for him to stay clean, as the job frequently forces him to deal with gangsters and scumbags. Fittingly, to promote the DVD release of “Middle Men” (it comes out tomorrow), the studio recruited porn star Jesse Jane, who’s in the movie for a good two to three seconds (no joke), to do interviews. A scheduling snafu relegated the chat to email-only (let’s just say that porn stars are very busy the week of the Super Bowl), but Miss Jane answered our questions within an hour of receiving them. You’ll forgive us for cleaning up the text speak, but we just couldn’t bring ourselves to put ‘lol’ in an interview.
Bullz-Eye: So what events do you have planned in Dallas?
Jesse Jane: I have 3 different Super Bowl parties at the Manhattan Lounge, and Iniquity. I also have a store signing, and a bunch of radio and I’m shooting a cable thing and something for HD Net.
BE: I saw the movie, and the sequences with the porn stars are cut pretty quickly, but I’m sure I saw you in the Vegas scene posing next to Luke Wilson, and getting a couple of lines. Did I miss anything else?
JJ: No that was it, just a small cameo part which was fun to shoot.
BE: How many days did you spend on the set?
JJ: I literally flew into Vegas, shot that day, and left the next morning.
BE: Did you have any personal dealings with the people the movie is based on?
JJ: No. The Internet thing started when I was still in school, so I’ve never met any of the guys that this movie is based on.
BE: Is there any of yourself in the Audrey Dawns character?
JJ: Actually no, I didn’t sleep with people to get ahead. I was just good in bed (Laughs), but I’ve never mixed business relationships with my personal relationships; that just never ends good.
BE: Talk about the differences between the Hollywood set and the ones you work on at Digital Playground.
JJ: Well, honestly, there’s just a lot more people on the mainstream set, and on my sets we have sex. (Laughs)
BE: Is acting in mainstream movies something you want to explore further?
JJ: I would love to get little parts here and there, it’s so much fun. But I’m not looking to cross over. I’m a sex symbol – I’m known for being a sex star.
BE: How do you feel about the adult entertainment industry’s steady move into mainstream culture? Do you think it’s great, or do even porn stars find it a little strange?
JJ: I think it’s amazing. People are realizing we are just people too, and some of us can act. Just because we have sex for a living doesn’t change us as people. It’s never going to completely cross over, so people need to realize that, but it’s fun they’re experimenting with it
BE: What are your thoughts on what I call the amateur/reality circuit of porn (Note: we listed the name of a few sites here as examples, but will not print them here), where you have full-fledged porn stars pretending to be first-timers? Is that good for the industry because it means more work for everyone, or is it bad because of the cheap production values and for forcing professional adult actors have to pretend to be reality stars? (Forgive me if this is a ridiculous question; I’ve never interviewed a porn star before.)
JJ: I guess it’s fine. I don’t shoot that stuff, but it helps other people, so that’s a good thing. It’s not my type of thing; I’m used to shooting higher quality films
BE: Adult films by nature are made on the cheap, but you’ve made some pretty elaborate ones. Tell us which one had the most big-budget effect or set.
JJ: Well, Digital Playground movies are huge budgets, and not cheap. Take “Pirates” and “Pirates 2,” for example, over million dollar budgets. We put money into our films to provide something that makes you want to watch.
BE: If a 16-year-old girl came up to you and told you that she wanted to be a porn star when she was old enough, what would you tell her?
JJ: To wait a few years – she might change her mind. If [she decides to go ahead with it], you need to not be embarrassed about it because people will find out. You can’t hide it, and you must enjoy sex, because people that do it just for the money won’t last.
BE: What are your plans once you decide to stop making movies?
JJ: I’m launching my own tequila in March – Diosa tequila launches March 7-9 at the biggest nightclub and bar convention in Vegas.

“Dirty Sanchez Nation” author Evan Marz acknowledges in the very beginning of his book that its sole reason for existing is for educational and offensive purposes only. He’s not suggesting that anyone do the things described here – he’s just compiling a a one-stop list of various acts of sexual depravity so that you’ll know what they mean when someone mentions them in conversation. And for that, we suppose that he should be thanked. God knows we learned a lot reading “Dirty Sanchez Nation”; as for the offensive part, well, that’s true, but not in the way that Marz might think.
Let’s put aside for a moment the commentary that comes with a book like this, that it is a symptom of just far pornography has crossed into mainstream pop culture, and whether that is a good thing. The real problem with “Dirty Sanchez Nation” is not the subject matter (though that is a problem) – it’s how the subject matter is handled. Simply put, Marz is an atrocious writer, both technically and creatively. When he’s not writing such grammatically plagued lines as these:
“Typically your so drunk you just keep eating.”
“Just as you’re about to burst, pull out and shot your load into her…”
“For all the girl’s who want to…”
He’s spinning poetry like this:
“When you hit her in the shitter with the one-eyed critter…”
“Smacking someone in the face with your purple headed yogurt slinger.”
Lame, lame, lame, lame, lame. It reads as if he wrote the entire book in an hour, and didn’t ask anyone to copy edit it. (There’s hardly a comma in sight.) The organization of the chapters is also laughably bad, with several call backs coming before the setup, a cardinal sin of comedy. For example, why list a variation on Butterface before listing Butterface, or create a section called “Cumshot Surprises” and list Facial, the most basic move, last? Lists like this should go from the simplest moves to more complex (or in this case, sicker) stunts, yes? And really, he couldn’t look up the proper spelling of Sasquatch? (It’s spelled ‘Sausquash’ here, ugh.) We’re also convinced that there is no such thing as a Flaming Amazon, because no woman would ever let a guy set her pubes on fire.
And yet, these many things still aren’t the book’s biggest problem.
No, the biggest problem is the book’s tone, which is of the ultra-misogynist, ‘Bitches ain’t shit’ variety. Take, for example, his description of a Strawberry Shortcake, missing punctuation and all: “Smacking some dirty whore in the face after you just blew your man goo on it creating a red and white pastry treat look.” Some dirty whore? Is Marz that unaware of the deep-seated self-loathing in his words? Another move begins, “While getting head from some skank…” Yes, the 17 girls you bragged of fellating you freshman year in your bio must be very proud to know that you think they’re skanks. The big question, though is: if you had sexual relations with 17 different women in a year, guess what that makes you?
The line between sex and violence here is stretched to the limit, and while Marz didn’t invent this stuff, he’s selling several of them like they might be fun to do, despite how humiliating, irresponsible or harmful they might be to the other party. There is a way to mine comedy from this subject; unfortunately, Marz couldn’t be bothered to take the extra effort to find it, and chose the easier, ‘ha ha girls are all dumb sluts’ path instead. We’re not sure which is worse: his demeaning view of women, or his lazy, lowest-common-denominator approach to comedy. Look at those chapter titles: “Gay Shit”? “Ugly Bitches”? This book is aimed squarely at the douchebag crowd.
“Dirty Sanchez Nation” is informative but needlessly hostile, not to mention occasionally ridiculous (is there really a phrase for blowing snot in a girl’s vagina, as if anyone would ever do such a thing?). It’s a book for people who think that any woman willing to get naked in front of them should be punished for doing so. Case in point: Mudslide, where Marz actually suggests that guys laugh after they blast diarrhea in a woman’s face. To quote the Avalanches song “Frontier Psychiatrist,” that boy needs therapy.
We’ll leave you with this, a line from Marz’s (obnoxious) bio: “…he began his career in acting, playing minor roles in both soft and hardcore pornography before finding his true calling in writing.” True calling in writing? That might be the funniest thing here. (Flying Armbar Enterprises 2010)
