Drink of the Week: The Improved Cocktail (Take 2)

Image ALT text goes here. So, as we learned last week, once upon a time, the term “cocktail” was not today’s generic term for any mixed alcoholic beverage but instead was a drink that called for a base spirit, bitters, sugar/simple syrup and maybe a bit of additional water and a fruit garnish of some sort. Thus, the original cocktail — which was not, obviously, called the Old Fashioned yet, as it was actually still kind of a newfangled thing — begat the Improved Cocktail, which adds a small amount of a liqueur to the mix and which, unlike the Old Fashioned today, is primarily served up (i.e. with the ice strained out).

While punches and numerous other mixed drinks definitely predated this Gilded Age classic, today’s drink is definitely something of an ur-cocktail in that it presumably helped open the door for the cornucopia of strong boozy beverages that are now the backbone of pretty much any home or professional bartender’s repertoire.

Last week’s Improved Cocktail recipe, however, was built around genever (the ur-gin from the Netherlands), and while that recipe can work very nicely with base spirits that are now more common, I’m not sure it’s the absolute best way to go when you’re dealing with whiskey or brandy. This week’s recipe is purloined/adapted from several different online sources which, in turn, were borrowed from the original recipe from ur-bartender Jerry Thomas. Compared to my genever recipe, it adds literally just a dash of one more ingredient and cuts the liqueur proportion in half, which may work better with base spirits that are somewhat more sweet.

Mike Haynes Interview: NFL Hall of Fame cornerback on prostate cancer, rule changes and Lyle Alzado

paul-eide-michael-haynes

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men. On any given Sunday, one in seven men watching an NFL game will be diagnosed with this disease, but the odds increase to one in five if they are African-American and one in three if they have a family history. These are stats that no one wants to see up on a scoreboard.

I spoke to pro football Hall of Famer and prostate cancer survivor Michael Haynes about his partnership with an early detection campaign called Know Your Stats and his career as one of the best defensive backs in NFL history. Listen to the full interview here.

On the last NFL rule change to benefit the defense:

I don’t think they even take the defense into consideration when they make rule changes – they take you guys, the fans! You guys are the ones they are considering. It’s like, how can we make our game more exciting? How many fans love a 7-3 football game? I know how important that is. I feel the anxiety and the energy in those 7-3 battles. But today, if a team can’t score 21 or 28 points, something is wrong with that offense. The coach may be fired, his job may be in jeopardy. Anyway, it’s a different game, but I still love the game.

I guess. The rule changes have changed the game so much. A lot of people are not aware of the importance of the rules and how they affect the game. There was a time when the hashes were wider. And when the hash marks were wider, it was very rare that a running back would rush for 1,000 yards. Floyd Little of the Denver Broncos, I recently had a conversation with him about this, and he shared the story that he was the 13th running back in history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season – it was a huge, huge milestone. Today, it’s not a huge milestone. Now, it’s almost commonplace for a guy to rush for 1,000 yards as a running back. So, that created a huge difference in the running game.

Bullz-Eye cowboys up at the Old Spice Dude Ranch

Bullz-Eye cowboys up at the Old Spice Dude Ranch

Our friends at Old Spice decided that the best way for us to experience Desperado, the latest scent within the Old Spice Red Zone Collection, would be to fully immerse us in the cowboy lifestyle at a dude ranch in Colorado!

Pretty crazy, right? Especially for a city slicker like myself who has never ridden horses, gone trap shooting, thrown a hatchet or done any of the other manly activities that they had in store for us. But life is all about new adventures (YOLO!), so I packed my bags and headed out West.

Our home for the week was the C Lazy U Ranch, an authentic dude ranch located about two hours outside of Denver that has been serving guests since 1919. Pulling up to the ranch, I was blown away by the endless green meadows, blue skies and the crisp Colorado air. This was going to be a memorable experience!

After getting settled in our rooms (and washing off the grime after traveling all day with a full assortment of Desperado products), we met up for the #SmellEm Hat Swap, where each of us got to pick out a cowboy hat of our very own. Once we were properly cowboy’d up, we headed off to dinner, followed by a trick rope performance from the legendary “Desperado Kid,” which was incredibly cool. We even got to try roping for ourselves, which is way harder than it looks.
