R.I.P. Joe Frazier

The great Joe Frazier has passed away at the age of 67 after a battle with cancer. We had the privilege of interviewing Mr. Frazier two years ago. He told us about his epic battles with Muhammad Ali and George Forman and also playfully hinted that he would have beaten Mike Tyson.

Frazier was a class act and he couldn’t have been nicer when we interviewed him. Yet he had to endure years of outrageous taunts from Ali and the bitterness stayed with him for years. But recently that changed according to ESPN:

Frazier, who in his later years would have financial trouble and end up running a gym in his adopted hometown of Philadelphia, took the jabs personally. He felt Ali made fun of him by calling him names and said things that were not true just to get under his skin. Those feelings were only magnified as Ali went from being an icon in the ring to one of the most beloved people in the world.

After a trembling Ali it the Olympic torch in 1996 in Atlanta, Frazier was asked by a reporter what he thought about it.

“They should have thrown him in,” Frazier responded.

He mellowed, though, in recent years, preferring to remember the good from his fights with Ali rather than the bad. Just before the 40th anniversary of his win over Ali earlier this year — a day Frazier celebrated with parties in New York — he said he no longer felt any bitterness toward Ali.

“I forgive him,” Frazier said. “He’s in a bad way.”

Frazier is one of the true boxing legends from its Golden Age and he will be missed.

Guinness introduces its new Black Lager

If you like Guinness, the famous Irish stout beer, and you also enjoy a good lager, then you’ll probably want to try the beer maker’s new Black Lager. We’re always up for a cold beer, and we were definitely intrigued by a new lager made by Guinness, so we gladly accepted the opportunity to try a cold one.

When you pour this into the glass the dark color immediately makes an impression. But if you look closely you can see that this won’t have the same creamy texture of a Guinness stout. One sip and that’s the first thing you’ll notice as well, but then there’s that taste. There’s enough here to remind you of the classic flavors of a Guinness. Yet it’s a lager so it has a lighter, crisper feel as well. The result is something truly unique.

Here’s how Guinness describes it:

Aroma: Gentle floral and fruity notes balance nicely with hints of roast.

Flavor: Light and crisp from the start, quickly revealing a subtle sweet malt and roast character with a pleasant slight hop finish that invites the next sip. Overall, a taste that is uniquely flavorful yet deeply refreshing.

Palate: Lively mouth-feel that is crisp and clean.

I can’t quarrel with any of that. I still prefer the famous stout, but the Black Lager offers a nice alternative.

Incipio Expat Nylon Backpack

School season is in full gear, but backpacks are always a great gift idea for students of all ages. They’re also great for traveling as they can often be much more comfortable and convenient than a briefcase.

We checked out the new Expat Nylon Backpack from Incipio and were impressed. The black backpack is much more sleek and compact than some of the bulkier backpacks out there and it’s efficiently designed to take full advantage of the available space. The black nylon also gives it a more understated and professional look as well, so it’s great for students along with any professionals going to a business meeting.

The backpack is designed for laptops and getting through airport security should be very easy with the Expat. You simply unzip the back compartment, open the Velcro at the top of the padded built-in sleeve and then slide out your laptop. The internal sleeve holds up to a 15″ device.

We also liked the small zippered pocket that the top of the pack that gives you a handy spot for your smartphone. It’s lined with faux fur as well for protection, and it has a rubber pass through for headphones for easy listening or talking while you’re walking. The backpack has a ton of sleeves and compartments to carry water bottles and other stuff.

The ergonomic shoulder straps are padded and very comfortable. We loaded up the bag and it still felt great.

Overall, this backpack is both stylish and practical, and it’s a great option if you’re looking for something for yourself or as a gift this holiday season.

NoiseHush NX80 3.5mm Stereo Headphones

We tried the new NoiseHush NX80 3.5mm Stereo Headphones and there were plenty of features to like. First and most importantly so sound was very good, particularly when you consider the reasonable cost for these headphones.

Next, these headphones have an inline answer/end button and microphone. With so many gadgets, we all need several sets of headphones and it’s nice to have options that let you make hands-free calls as well.

This headset also sports a fettuccine style no tangle cord. After dealing with cords that tangle up you’ll appreciate this feature. The cord is also bright red, so with the black ear buds the headphones look unique as well.

These make a great stocking stuffer, particularly for someone who wants to make a style statement.

Tia Jackson at the 2011 Hooters International Swimsuit Pageant

Tia Jackson Hooters pageant bikini

We obviously enjoyed covering the 15th Annual Hooters International Swimsuit Pageant earlier this year, we also had poolside access at the Fontainebleau in Miami Beach where we met and photographed some of the contestants in their bikinis.

Above we have a slideshow of the amazing Tia Jackson sporting a yellow bikini and showing off her incredible figure. Tia obviously keeps in great shape – check out those abs! Tia also flashed her pretty smile as Paul Miller got some great shots.

We’ll be posting more poolside photos of Hooters contestants so check back soon.
