Keep Your Mind Sharp for Life by Learning a Foreign Language

Learning a foreign language has advantages beyond allowing you to order food in a restaurant when you go on holiday. According to the latest research, it also helps your brain.

Experts are now suggesting that learning a language can help to give your brain a boost and prevent it from suffering problems as you get older. The more languages that you learn, the better. But even if you just learn one extra language, you could help to protect yourself from Alzheimer’s and other conditions.

The problem for many people is how to learn another language in the first place, so here are some ideas to keep in mind.

Live Abroad

The single best thing you can do if you want to learn a new language is to live overseas. When you live in another country, you will be able to immerse yourself in the new culture and pick up words and phrases almost without realizing it. The results are even better if you live with people who do not speak English. It can be tough at first, but you will begin to absorb the new language on a daily basis, and the longer you live overseas, the better.

First spending choices for lottery winners are surprising

stacks of 100 bills

When we buy a lottery ticket, what’s the first thing you think about spending that huge cash prize on if you happened to have the lucky numbers?
Many of us imagine that we’d be booking exotic holidays or buying luxury cars, a beach house, that kind of thing. But, in fact, it seems that most lottery winners are actually quite practically-minded when it comes to first purchases with a lottery win.

In a survey by pixmania.com in 2012, winners who had won a minimum of $1 million were asked what three purchases they had made in the first ten days of winning the lottery draw. A surprising number bought what you might think were mediocre or, frankly, dull items with their windfalls.
A quarter of respondents made a new washing machine their first purchase, and the second most purchased item was a new sofa for the living room. An iPad came in as the third most popular – with 17% of respondents buying one. Fourth place went to a new handbag, and in fifth place, sports clothing was another popular purchase.

Movie Review: “Begin Again”

Starring
Mark Ruffalo, Keira Knightley, Hailee Steinfeld, Adam Levine, James Corden
Director
John Carney

It’s incredible what can be achieved when you combine music with film, and John Carney exploited that perfect pairing with his musical drama “Once.” It’s been eight years since the small indie walked away with an Academy Award for Best Original Song, and in that time, the Irish-born writer/director made a couple films in his native country that flew so far under the radar that they never saw release here. So while it may seem a tad desperate of Carney to mark his Hollywood debut with another music-driven relationship drama, he’s simply playing to his strengths. “Begin Again” doesn’t quite have the same magic of “Once,” but it’s a sweet and cuddly crowd-pleaser highlighted by a pair of great performances and some catchy tunes.

Mark Ruffalo stars as Dan Mulligan, a self-described “selfish, depressed prick” who’s just been fired from the very record label he helped found. While on a bender later that night, he stumbles into a bar hosting an open mic event and is immediately moved by an original song performed by Greta (Keira Knightley), a British singer-songwriter who’s just had an equally bad day after being dumped by her rock star boyfriend (Adam Levine) following his first taste of success. Determined to share Greta’s indisputable talent with the rest of the world, Dan convinces her to record an album with a live band in different locations across New York City in the hope that he can convince his former business partner (Mos Def) to sign Greta to their label and rescue his job.

The 2014 Audi A4 Quattro Triptonic is a winner in the mid-size class, packing a lot of punch while delivering the steady good looks expected of the car maker. In top form both in terms of looks and technology, it stands out with its sporty, yet balanced character.

EXTERIOR

The dynamic styling of the 2014 Audi A4 Quattro catches your eye from the moment you see this car with the 18-inch, 10-spoke RS design wheels, Audi xenon plus lighting with LED DRL tail lights and aluminum window surrounds. The distinctive design details – such as the stainless-steel underbody protection, the single-frame grille with vertical chrome bars and the range of wheels – underscore its strong character. The ice silver metallic paint was gorgeous and just seems to fit this car perfectly.

INTERIOR

Audi’s interior keeps getting better and better while obviously chasing perfection. The interior of the Audi A4 features all of the classic strengths of the brand’s uncompromising workmanship, finely coordinated colors and materials and logical, intuitive controls. The Audi A4 offers luxurious climate-controlled comfort seats for the driver and front-seat passenger. Small fans provide three-speed ventilation to the seat cushion and back. The trunk has a capacity of 16.95 cu ft. Capacity with the rear seatbacks folded down (a standard feature in the Quattro version) is 33.97 cu ft. There is also a wide selection in the areas of communication and infotainment. The versatile MMI navigation plus system can be combined with the Bluetooth car phone online, which connects the A4 to the Internet and brings the tailored Audi connect services on board. Another highlight is the sound system from Bang & Olufsen.
