Compass and Map
Once you’re dressed for the day appropriately, you’ll need to make sure that you have a compass and a map of the location that you will be hiking in. Make sure you understand how to find your location on the map according to the junctions and landmarks that are noted on it. Learning how to use a compass is also very important, as this will help you to find your way if you get lost. A GPS device may seem like an easier option, but a compass doesn’t rely on batteries to work.
Protection from the Sun and Hydration
Make sure that whenever you go on a hike, you take lip balm, a hat, some sunscreen, and sunglasses with you to prevent damage from too much sun. If you’re incredibly sensitive to the sun, then you might consider wearing sun-proof clothing too. At the same time, make sure that you bring plenty of water with you wherever you go, and remember to remain hydrated.
This could mean drinking a liter of water before you set off, and then another liter every couple of hours. You’re always going to feel better on a hike if you’re well hydrated, and you might benefit from carrying a water filter with you in case you run out of purified water.

Finally, make sure that whenever you go hiking you are stocked full of first-aid supplies that will help to protect you and the people that you may be hiking with.
