EZ Grill: just like the name but so much more
Posted by Mike Farley (07/16/2010 @ 4:37 pm)

Summer is here. Well, it’s been here for a while in most parts of the country, and there is lots of it left. That means beaches, lots of outdoor activities and one of the things guys love most–grilling.
But have you ever been in a situation where you just want to spontaneously grill, and you can’t because you’re on the road, unprepared, or out of propane or charcoal?
Well, EZ Grill has the answer, and is the answer for you. Before I ramble on into info-mercialism here, I’ll just tell you that I was sent a sample of one of these mechanisms to try, and I finally did so for lunch today. And let me tell you, it not only cooked my bratwurst to perfection (yeah, I live in Wisconsin), but it was so easy a monkey could do it.
All you need to do is remove the plastic packaging and cardboard top that has the directions on it. You shake the grill and put it on its little stand. Then, and this is important….you have to place it on a heat-resistant surface. For me, this was the concrete patio off of our den. You light the paper underneath the grates that fires up the charcoal beneath it, and you’re ready to rock. After about 10-15 minutes of flames, the grill is ready when the coals are charred and the flames have died down. For you pros, you could have just skipped the last few lines…that’s Grilling 101. Anyway, it took my brat about 10 minutes to cook, and it was previously frozen. So that’s pretty awesome.
The grill is small….it might be able to fit 4 burgers or so. But you can always buy more than one. It’s also disposable and recyclable. A win-win for you and for the environment. And it’s inexpensive. I saw one in the store for $20, but now you can even buy this bundle pack for $19.99. Yes, and if you order now…..(sorry, couldn’t resist!). But you get the idea. This is a great product. Buy a few and keep them on hand or in the trunk of your car for when you might need it.
Happy grilling and happy summer!

Pringles Extreme potato crisps
Posted by Mike Farley (07/15/2010 @ 4:46 pm)

I have what is probably considered an unhealthy affinity for Pringles. Sure, they’re not real potato chips, just chopped and formed potato crisps with lots of chemical enhancements. But it’s not like most junk foods don’t already fit that description.
Anyway, being that I love spicy food and I know many of you do, I was bowled over last week in the grocery store when I encountered Pringles Extreme, a variety pack with three new flavors of mini-Pringles. The flavors are Smokin’ Hot Ranch, Torchin’ Tamale and Buffalo Wing. And well, they are awesome…for the most part. Here is our take:
Smokin’ Hot Ranch–these tasted like a cross between ranch flavor Doritos and old-school barbecue potato chips. But they have a pleasant spicy kick that hits you in the back of the throat on a time-delay.
Torchin’ Tamale–these were my least favorite of the bunch. There is a salsa flavor with red pepper-y heat. But the onion aftertaste is pretty strong, kind of overwhelming in fact.
Buffalo Wing–nothing sucks about anything that tastes like Buffalo wings. And that’s true of these crisps, which have a nice salty kick akin to real deal wing sauce. These also have a somewhat weird aftertaste, but a pleasant one, keeping that nice authentic wing taste with you.
Overall, this product is highly recommended if you like Pringles or spicy food or both. Go check ‘em out!

Kluckr Kompetitions wraps up Spring 2010 tour
Posted by Staff (06/29/2010 @ 4:39 pm)

Kluckr.com has quickly become the go-to spot for local wing info and national wing enthusiasm. Kluckr’s latest event was a national tour of wing-eating Kompetitions, co-hosted by local fraternity chapters to benefit local charities. The tour was a huge success, culminating with an epic wing-eating showdown at Texas Tech.
The first event was held at Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tennessee back in April. The competition pit Vanderbilt’s Lambda Chi Alpha Gama – Delta Zeta chapter and the Pi Kappa Alpha Sigma Chapter against one another at the Sportsman’s Grille for some good old-fashioned wing smashin’. Lambda Chi Alpha raised money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and Pi Kappa Alpha for Dismas House in Nashville. Lambda Chi’s Michael Gadebusch led the field with an impressive 15 wings in 5 minutes.
A week and a half later Kluckr was at UNC-Charlotte for another Kompetition, this time hosted by Sigma Alpha Epsilon for the entire campus. Competitors made it out to Wild Wing Café to witness Teddy Holthee throw down 13 wings in just five minutes. Only 13, you say? I guess we didn’t mention they were soaked in enough hot sauce to make even the most resilient wing-lover cry.
In early May, Kluckr paired up with the Theta Delta Chi’s from Schenectady and raised more than $300 for the Bethesda House. They also paid homage to Murphy Potter, who ate 10 of Gepetto’s Mad Dog 357 wings in just five minutes.
From there it was on to the final stop on the tour, Texas Tech. If anyone knew how to eat, it would be these guys. The local Alpha Kappa Psi chapter searched far and wide for the ten hungriest competitors and set them head-to-head at one of Lubbock’s famous Buffalo Wild Wings. The undisputed champion of both the event and the national tour was Preston “The Wild Thing” Whaley, who wolfed down a monstrous 29 wings in just 5 minutes. Second, Third, and Fourth place all put up impressive numbers, at 24, 22, and 21 wings respectively.
If you think you have what it takes to upset Preston, keep an eye on Kluckr.com for Kompetitions this fall. Kluckr will be kicking off the 2010-2011 school year with a tour of the SEC. Get your fraternity organized and you could be chosen to host your own Kluckr Kompetition.
The Great Taddy Porter Grill-Off
Posted by David Medsker (06/29/2010 @ 4:11 pm)
With the 4th of July – and therefore the peak of the grilling season – just around the corner, we asked the members of Taddy Porter, whose eponymous debut conveniently drops today, if they would be so kind as to share some grilling tips with us. The boys were happy to oblige, picking up one of the largest pieces of steak we’ve ever seen (we couldn’t help but laugh, though, that the background music during that bit happened to be the most un-Taddy Porter-esque Little Boots) and roasting that puppy over coals like real men, with a “MacGruber” reference thrown in for good measure. Even better is the vegetable side dish they chose to serve with it: bacon-wrapped jalapeno peppers, stuffed with cream cheese. Yum.
It’s true: Taddy Porter are from Stillwater, Oklahoma. We’re afraid to ask them how many “Almost Famous” jokes they’ve had to suffer during their recent press blitz.
Wholly Queso is here and it’s queso-licious
Posted by Mike Farley (06/08/2010 @ 4:30 pm)

With all of the processed foods out there that have an ingredient list as long as a phone book, it’s refreshing that there are companies going in the opposite direction. One such company is Fresherized Foods, which has brought us the Wholly Brand of guacamole and salsa for a while now.
Well, now they have taken snacking to a whole new level, with the introduction of Wholly Queso dips. Wholly Queso is made with real cheese and vegetables, and you have to refrigerate it, which is always a good sign when you’re trying to put less junk in your body.
The fine folks at Bow Wow Consulting sent us an awesome cooler filled with these dips, as well as a few other Wholly Brand products and chips to try them with to boot! And the verdict is this….the queso is simply awesome and you should go find it now. Seriously! Here are some more detailed thoughts:
Wholly Queso Classic–This was the more orange tinged queso, and instantly you can tell this is restaurant quality stuff, not the kind of queso you find in a jar near the Doritos. The taste is fresh and has both a sharp cheddar bite and nice chili pepper undertone.
Wholly Queso Blanco–This one was my favorite. It was even more authentically Mexican and had more pepper flavor, and an even sharper cheese bite. Plus, it was spicier than the Classic, and spicier is always better.
Wholly Salsa–The salsa also comes in a refrigerated tub and is incredibly fresh tasting, just like the stuff you get in most Mexican restaurants. The tomatoes were abundant with just the right amount of onion and jalapenos, but the only thing that would have made it better was if there was some cilantro. Of course, you can always add your own.
Wholly Guacamole dip–If you don’t have time to make guacamole and are looking for something quick and easy yet healthy, this is the stuff. You cut open the pouch and squeeze it into a serving bowl and start dipping. It’s creamy and homemade tasting, and, like the salsa, it also doesn’t kill you with onions. The spicy version of the guacamole is even better, but only if you dig spicy food. If you don’t, you’ve probably stopped reading by now anyway.
Wholly Party Dip–This is the guacamole with a layer of spicy pico de gallo on top. The pico de gallo is really spicy, and again, not too onion-y. The combination of flavors is incredible and really works. And the best part is, all you do is open the container and start dipping!
So there you go. You can find Wholly Brand dips in most grocery stores and for more information, go to www.fresherizedfoods.com

More tasty (and some spicy) snacks from Frito-Lay
Posted by Mike Farley (06/07/2010 @ 5:17 pm)

It was a beautiful day at my house recently back when I received a package from Frito-Lay of snacks to try and review right here. I had already found their Doritos Burn Flavor chips locally and I’m craving them again as we speak. Anyway, I offered to review some other Frito-Lay snacks that I hadn’t tried. And here they are, in no particular order:
Funyun’s Flamin’ Hot Onion Flavored Rings–Another extension of the Frito-Lay “Flamin’ Hot” franchise, complete with the red glow that works its way onto your fingers as you eat them. I love Funyun’s, and I love spicy food, so this was a slam dunk for me. I could probably eat 10 bags of these right now.
Chee-tos Giant cheese puffs–If Eric Cartman were a real person, he would eat these. We’re talking balls that measure one inch (some more) around, that for some folks would require two bites. The novelty alone was worth trying them for, but it’s not like you’ll want to sit around and munch on these. They taste fine, but when you eat the smaller variety, you get more cheese flavor all around.
Chee-tos Mighty Zingers Sharp Cheddar & Salsa Picante–Unlike the Giant puffs, these are the “fried” variety of Chee-tos. The “sharp cheddar” flavor are indeed nicely cheesy with just a bit more sharp bite than regular Chee-tos. And the salsa picante ones, which are the same color as the Flamin’ Hot snacks, have a hint of cheese but a more prominent salsa flavor–and an authentic one at that, in which you can taste both tomato and a hint of onion and hot peppers. Together these two flavors in one bag go together like peanut butter and jelly. No joke!
Lay’s brand Kettle Cooked Jalapeno Flavor Chips–Well, I’ll admit I’m not a huge fan of kettle cooked (i.e. extra crispy) potato chips. But hey, if I had a choice, I’d still rather eat a chip than a stalk of broccoli. So I dug in to these, and while they have a super crunch and a nice jalapeno spice, there is too much onion powder in these chips that overpowers them. Not only that, after eating a nice handful, I had onion breath and dry mouth for the rest of the day.
Doritos Late Night Tacos at Midnight Tortilla Chips–If you, like me, are old enough to remember when Doritos first came out, this one will take you back. Back then (I think maybe in the ’70′s?), they had plain corn, taco flavor and nacho cheese. And my favorite by far was the taco flavor, which they stopped making after a while, brought back and then stopped making again. Now it’s back disguised as this “Late Night” version, which is every bit as good as the original Taco flavor and then some. In fact, you can almost close your eyes here and feel like you’re eating a fast food taco. And we all know how great those taste after a few beers, so the “Late Night” tag on these is an arrow through the hearts and taste buds of those who troll the convenience store aisles late at night. Seriously though, these chips are just awesome, even in the middle of the day.
I hope you had as much fun reading this as I did eating and writing. But I don’t know how that’s possible, so go try some!

Drink of the Week: Kentucky Lemonade from Maker’s Mark
Posted by Staff (05/28/2010 @ 4:55 pm)
Our friends at Maker’s Mark were kind enough to send us a bottle of their signature Kentucky Bourbon along with some great drink recipes. We chose this one as everyone gears up for Memorial Day and the unofficial beginning of the summer season.
Kentucky Lemonade
Yield – 1 serving
* 1 1/2 parts Maker’s Mark
* 1/2 part triple sec
* 4 parts of lemonade
* 2 parts lemon & lime soda
Pour Maker’s Mark, triple sec, lemonade and soda into a shaker. Shake and pour over crushed ice.
You’ll easily recognize Maker’s Mark as it’s sold in squarish bottles and sealed with red wax that drips from the top. The signature look is one of many reasons this is a great addition to your home bar. Try the drink above for your cookout this weekend and your guests will be very happy . . . and refreshed!

Grüner Veltliner: The wine you should drink all summer
Posted by Staff (05/28/2010 @ 4:47 pm)
This week’s Happy Hour entry is a wine review to get you ready for summer. Gabe Sasso takes a look at several wines from Grüner Veltliner. It sounds like the kind of wine your lady friend would like as well, so it’s definitely worth checking out.
One of the wine varietals that has been making its presence known the last few years on U.S. shelves, wine lists, and the like is Grüner Veltliner. This is a white grape that’s predominately grown in Austria. It’s a grape that often produces crisp, aromatic wines that are particularly well suited to pair with a wide array of foods. Depending on the style in which it is made, as well as the provenance of the grape source, the wine can also have the propensity to age quite well. Other wines from Austria are starting to find more room on our shelves too. On the red side of things, Blaufränkisch is a noteworthy varietal that we should be seeing more and more of, as time goes on. Grüner Veltliner, though, is the entrée for many wine lovers into the joys and complexities of Austrian wine. Today I’ll look at three examples that provide excellent quality, and value, and a cross section of Grüner Veltliner styles.

Product Review: Perky Jerky
Posted by Mike Farley (05/19/2010 @ 2:28 pm)

Does the idea of caffeinated beef jerky scare you? Or does it literally get your blood pumping? Well, one taste of Perky Jerky, a new beef jerky coated with caffeine, and it should do the latter without doing the former anymore. Seriously, this stuff not only gives you a bit of a jolt via Guarana (1 oz. of jerky has about as much caffeine as a can of Red Bull), but it tastes delicious. The second ingredient after beef is soy sauce, so as you can imagine you get a really nice flavor similar to that of teriyaki. And really, do you know anyone that doesn’t like the taste of soy sauce or teriyaki? So let’s review…Perky jerky tastes good, gives you a lift, and also gives you some protein to fill you up so you won’t feast on chips or cheese puffs when you’re hungry. Sounds like Grub For Guys heaven, doesn’t it? And no, it’s not too good to be true. Go try it for yourself!
Note: the press materials say that Perky Jerky may not be available yet where you buy jerky, so visit www.perkyjerky.com for more info and be sure to ask your local convenience store to carry it.

Mountain Dew DEWMocracy flavors review
Posted by Mike Farley (05/11/2010 @ 3:40 pm)
As far as caffeinated beverages go, Mountain Dew and its neon green color have always appealed to those in need of a boost, and to those who want something different than cola or less potent than Red Bull. Well this year, Mountain Dew has launched its DEWMocracy 2, a 12-month consumer driven campaign to choose its new flavor. We had the chance to taste those three flavors and offer an opinion.

Mountain Dew Typhoon—This flavor was like a turbo-charged fruit punch. If you’re old enough to remember Tahitian Treat Soda, that’s what this tastes like, only with caffeine. It’s decent, but there is something inherently odd about fruit punch being carbonated.
Mountain Dew Distortion—A regular Mountain Dew, complete with the neon green color, but blasted with lime. This was our least favorite, as it just tasted like, well, regular Mountain Dew with a lime twist.
Mountain Dew White Out—This was the best of the bunch, as the citrus infusion here tasted more authentic, like a combination of orange and lemon. It was more like a cross between regular Dew and lemon-lime soda, and overall it left us wanting more.
Also, check out the contest we’re running on DEWMocracy
