Coming Soon: A Moviegoer’s Guide to May

“X-Men: Apocalypse”

Who: James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, Oscar Isaac, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Olivia Munn, Evan Peters and Rose Byrne
What: With the emergence of the world’s first mutant, Apocalypse, the X-Men must unite to defeat his extinction-level plan.
When: May 27th
Why: The latest in the rebooted X-Men universe finds McAvoy’s team squaring off against Isaac’s proto-mutant with lots of world-in-the-balance action. Oh, and because it’s an X-Men film and those can never stray too far from the same plot, Magneto (Fassbender) is once again involved as an antagonist for the team of scrappy mutants. It will be interesting to see if Singer can match the highs of “Days of Future Past” or if this will be a slog with too-serious, leather-clad characters battling it out. But with an ‘80s setting, the return of several fan favorite heroes, and the arrival of some new potential favorites, it’s possible that this will be another fun thrill-ride like the last one.

“Alice Through the Looking Glass”

Who: Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Sacha Baron Cohen, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Alan Rickman and Michael Sheen
What: Alice returns to the whimsical world of Wonderland and travels back in time to save the Mad Hatter.
When: May 27th
Why: Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” grossed a billion dollars, and yet I don’t know anyone that enjoyed it. But with all that money up there, it was unlikely that the studio would pass up another chance to wet its beak. Though there’s a new director in the chair (James Bobin of “The Muppets” and “Flight of the Conchords”), and the visuals are intriguing, if a bit of a CGI nightmare, that hardly inspires confidence. Perhaps this movie will also score big at the box office only to be forgotten by the public, except as another film where Johnny Depp gets to overact in a weird hat.
