Coming Soon: A Moviegoer’s Guide to October

“The Last Witch Hunter”

Who: Vin Diesel, Rose Leslie, Elijah Wood and Michael Caine
What: The last witch hunter is all that stands between humanity and the combined forces of the most horrifying witches in history.
When: October 23rd
Why: Apart from the “Fast and Furious” movies, Vin Diesel has yet to prove himself as a bankable leading man, and unfortunately, that doesn’t seem likely to change with this new fantasy/adventure film from director Breck Eisner. Though the sword-and-sorcery genre certainly plays to Diesel’s strengths as an actor, and the supporting cast boasts some good talent, “The Last Witch Hunter” doesn’t look any better than the crop of “Game of Thrones” wannabes trying to make a quick buck off the latest trend. My inner geek is secretly hoping that this movie breaks the pattern of bad fantasy films, but you’d have more luck playing the lottery.

“Our Brand is Crisis”

Who: Sandra Bullock, Billy Bob Thorton, Anthony Mackie, Zoe Kazan and Scoot McNairy
What: A Bolivian presidential candidate failing badly in the polls enlists an elite American management team led by the damaged but brilliant strategist “Calamity” Jane Bodine.
When: October 30th
Why: Based on the 2005 documentary of the same name, “Our Brand is Crisis” boasts such a solid group of talent that it’s hard to believe the movie received mostly unfavorable reviews following its premiere in Toronto. Though this isn’t the first time that David Gordon Green has worked within the studio system, it does feel like a strange project for the director to tackle. Nevertheless, Sandra Bullock appears to be at the top of her game, while Billy Bob Thorton is always fun playing the villain, and as long as Green can strike the right balance between comedy and drama, there’s no reason this shouldn’t be good.
