I first drove the 2015 Hyundai Sonata last summer when the all-new design was introduced, and I noted then how much I liked the evolution of the Sonata design. The Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design language led to a more refined and upscale look for the Sonata that should help the vehicle stand out in the crowded mid-sized sedan market.

I recently had the opportunity to drive the new Sonata for a full week and this experience reinforced the positive impressions I had last summer. I tested the Sport 2.0T which features a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that is optimized for lower-RPM drivability and produces 245 horsepower and 260 lb. ft. of torque. I pointed out in my original review that you could feel the difference driving the turbo over the standard 185 horsepower engine so I was happy to have the turbo for the week. It won’t blow you away with its performance but the consistent responsiveness made this an appealing every day vehicle.

One thing that stood out this time around was the roominess of the interior. Hyundai stresses that the 2015 Sonata’s efficient packaging delivers 106.1 cu. ft. of passenger volume and a total interior volume of 122.4 cu. ft. and that the 2015 Sonata is classified as a large car by the EPA. I loaded the car several times with passengers and the comfort and size to the interior was consistently noticed, making the Sonata an ideal option for many families as well. Still, the car doesn’t feel too big when you’re driving it.

I also enjoyed the much-improved interior as well. The Sonata Sport 2.0T gets a unique interior featuring a D-cut steering wheel, paddle shifters and a sport instrument cluster.

Reducing undesired noise inside the cabin was a top priority for the 2015 Sonata. Engineers reduced the size of the apertures in the bulkhead and increased use of sound deadening materials in the dashboard to prevent unwanted noise from entering the cabin. Engine notes were tuned to be pleasing to the ear without being intrusive. More sound absorption materials are used under the floorpan and an underbody tray made of fibrous glass expansion board improves aerodynamics while reducing unwanted road noise.

The 2015 Sonata’s efficient packaging delivers outstanding passenger and interior volume. With 106.1 cu. ft. of passenger volume and a total interior volume of 122.4 cu. ft., 2015 Sonata is classified as a large car by the EPA.
