Even though it is only January, it is not too soon to start thinking about shedding those Christmas calories and shaping up for the summer. Losing weight and gaining fitness is not a slam bang affair, and taking a few months to get in trim is the best way to stay that way. Visits to the gym and some aerobics sessions are the usual favourites, and cycling too is a popular approach. However, to get really fit while cycling, takes a different approach to the leisurely cycles most of us participate in; it takes drive and energy. To help you make the most of your cycling, here are a few tips that will improve your performance.

Equipment

You should be equipped with the best quality bike you can afford; it is as simple as that. Though some bikes will cost a fortune and be beyond your budget, you could always buy one on higher purchase and spread the cost or, even more preferable, you could join a cycle to work scheme and have the money deducted from your wages before tax; making savings of up to 42% on the overall expense. The better the bike the better the build, and probably the lighter (and stronger) the frame. Getting your bike set up properly is also vital, so take it to a professional who will improve your performance and reduce any injuries; leaving you to concentrate on giving it your all.

Attitude

Talking about giving it your all, you are going to need dedication and the right attitude to get the best from your rides. It can be far too easy when cycling to relax and enjoy the ride itself, but that is not the point of your particular ride. Some people find it difficult to motivate themselves, or to even have the right mental attitude to push themselves a little further; if this is true for you, you will need to change. Setting targets and using a reward system is a great way to improve your performance, as is teaming up with like-minded cyclists; but there are also some great apps out there that will help you improve your mental strength. Athlete Minder is a great example (look here for more information), and its unique approach will soon have you hitting your targets more frequently.

Diet

It cannot be stated too often, how important diet is too good workouts; fortunately there is a multitude of articles that you can read that will give you the information you require. However, you need to be careful with your choice of carbohydrates for your cycle workout, and remember that they are not the be all and end all of your diet. You are also going to need your fair share of proteins, vitamins, and minerals, to keep your muscles repairing themselves and to help you avoid inuring them. There is a wonderful article from the BBC, that will give you a great insight into the requirements for a hard workout, and it is well worth you reading it.

Variation

Apparently, variety is the spice of life; so spice up your rides. Don’t keep to the same routine day in and day out, look for different routes and conditions. Taking a route that combines flat riding with hills and mountains will increase your strength as well as your stamina, and if you include different surfaces too, you will also find a benefit from that. Cycling fast on a straight road may make you feel good, but it will not give you the greatest workout.

Cycling really is a great way to keep fit, and can also be pleasurable for you. Using these tips will help you get the most out of your cycling, but so much of it is your input and drive that these alone will not help; it is you that is the main ingredient in you keep fit regime. Remember, cycling is dangerous, so keep fit and, above all, keep safe.
