Coming Soon: A Moviegoer’s Guide to February

“3 DAYS TO KILL”

Who: Kevin Costner, Hailee Steinfeld, Amber Heard and Connie Nieslen
What: A dying Secret Service agent trying to reconnect with his daughter is offered an experimental drug that could save his life in exchange for one last assignment.
When: February 21st
Why: Between his supporting roles in “Man of Steel” and “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit,” as well as the upcoming football drama “Draft Day,” Kevin Costner is experiencing a bit of a career renaissance at the moment. And with “3 Days to Kill,” the veteran actor appears to be taking a page out of Liam Neeson’s playbook by headlining his very own action film, also co-written by “Taken” scribe Luc Besson. Though the story sounds just as ridiculous as Besson’s other movies, Costner’s involvement suggests that it could be a lot of fun. The rest of the cast isn’t too shabby either – especially Hailee Steinfeld, who’s still yet to capitalize on the promise she showed in “True Grit” – although with a director like McG behind the camera, you never really know what you’re going to get.

“NON-STOP”

Who: Liam Neeson, Julianne Moore, Lupita Nyong’o, Michelle Dockery and Corey Stoll
What: An air marshal springs into action aboard an international flight when the plane is held hostage by a mysterious figure threatening to kill a passenger every two hours.
When: February 28th
Why: Liam Neeson has certainly made a go of this whole action star phase over the past few years, but even he must be growing tired of playing what’s essentially the same character over and over again. While “Non-Stop” is no “Taken,” it might as well be judging by the trailer. It’s as if the screenwriters watched only Luc Besson films for an entire week, squeezing in viewings of “Passenger 57” and “Flightplan” when they could, and came up with this incredibly absurd concept as the basis for a thriller. Though Neeson is still capable of classing up any movie that he’s in, the real draw here is the supporting cast, which features some of the hottest talent in Hollywood, including Lupita Nyong’o, Michelle Dockery, Corey Stoll and Scoot McNairy.
