If I were to listen to this music when I was going through "heavy shit," I simply wouldn't have gotten through it. Your taste in music laughable. John Mayer? Come on now, and you claim to be a real man, "Being men, we’re not supposed to show when we’re down." Being a real man means standing up to life's problems, and not tolerating weakness in yourself. A real man is not afraid to acknowledge when "he's down;" he does not let it control his life, however. Machismo and boorish behaviour are not the qualities of real men, but of cowardly posers and bull dykes.

If you don't like people's comments, don't post such a pathetic list of music. We are all entitled to our opinions--you think your music is good for bad times, and I think that your music sucks and will cause one to have bad times in life. Most of your "heavy shit" has to do with girl problems. So I guess I can see why your taste in music is so risible.

cool list. Love that you have Henley's 'End of the Innocence' there. That is a masterful album, and certainly his crowning achievement (including his work with Eagles).

I would add Counting Crows' 'Recovering the Satellites' with that. While lots of records from that era, in particular grunge, dealt with alienation and loneliness, I'm not sure any have so beautifully captured the desperation to overcome that alienation.

The The's "Hanky Panky": covers of Hank Wiliams tunes that without proper dosage during a time of personal struggle has the potential of making you think bad thoughts.
I would also add Jeff Buckley's "Live at Sine'" tracks on here. Very powerful, very real, very deep. Impossible to feign true passion.
Put those two on, and you'll be crying like a newborn in no time.
You're welcome!

A slew of comments in a matter of hours. Clearly someone linked to this. Tell me, commenters, how did you find this piece?

As for Dylan, is there some rule somewhere that says people are required to listen to Blood on the Tracks once one has been dumped? What if we can't stand the sound of his voice?

No one here is calling this the definitive list of breakup albums - these are just the albums that got us through.
